The necessity of the introduction of Aeronautical Engineering (AE) program at Bangladesh has long been felt and MIST is the pioneer technical institute to introduce Aeronautical Engineering Program in Bangladesh. Compared to any other institute of engineering including BUET, MIST has the highest preparedness to introduce Aeronautical Engineering because of the requirement of defense where the study and practice of Aeronautical Engineering is a part of service requirement. Also, Aeronautical Engineering is required to introduce space-based research in our country. The Aeronautical Engineering (AE) program has 02 (two) major disciplines namely “Aerospace” and “Avionics”. The syllabus comprises a total of 160 credits & 194 contact hours for Aerospace discipline and 160 credits & 194 contact hours for the Avionics discipline. Aeronautical Engineering plays a vital role in all fields of modern human activities. It has established itself as one of the most important branches of engineering. The Aeronautical Engineering undergraduate program provides an excellent technical background for persons who want to work in the field of Aerodynamics, Jet Propulsion, Structural Analysis, Avionics and other disciplines. In addition to lectures and practical sessions in the classroom, the undergraduate program also includes industrial/educational visits to different reputed industries/places both at home and abroad. The new generation of Aeronautical engineers is encouraged to undertake research and development activities in the above areas and this department is committed to the study and analysis of fundamental as well as applied problems. Problems of military and national importance have consequently received great emphasis in the activities of this department. In addition to the above, the Aeronautical department has initiated postgraduate studies and research leading to higher degrees i.e. M. Sc. (Engg) in 2016 and Ph.D. in 2019.
The Department of Aeronautical Engineering has been implementing the Outcome Based Education (OBE) system since Spring-2019 semester.
In light of OBE, for the Department of Aeronautical Engineering,
The programs offered by the AE department are:
Undergraduate level: BSc in AE
Masters Programme: MSc in AE
Doctoral Programme: Ph.D in AE
The Dept of AE draws its strength from the experienced pool of highly professional faculties. The dept is headed by the Head of the department and consists of a good number of professors, assistant professors, lecturers, teaching assistants and research assistant. The faculties are drawn in from diverse nationalities, diverse prior professional exposure (Military, Industry, Academia), diverse educational qualification and background and thus provide large areas of expertise for students to benefit. Based on requirements, domain specialists are drawn from other educational institutes like BUET as also from the industry. 2 IAF officers are also among the faculty.
The department of AE provides for a conducive learning environment for the students in the form of state of the art classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. While the classrooms provide an opportunity to learn the theoretical aspect of the subject, the laboratories provide an opportunity for the students to have a “hands-on” experience on technology. The air-conditioned classrooms with projection & camera system, document readers are an ideal place for collaborative learning. The existing laboratories include Applied Aerodynamics Lab, Jet Propulsion Lab, Radar Engg Lab, Aero-Structure Lab and Avionics and Ground Electronics Lab.
The department is dignified with a number of publications of books, journals and papers both in national and international range. The students with the help of their respective faculty members publish a considerable amount of research work every year starting from 2012 till date.
The department arranges seminars, conferences and workshopsfor the overall academic growth of the students as well as the department. Till date, one international conference and several seminars as well as workshops have been successfully organized by the department. The first semniar organized by the department was in 2010 on the Propects of Aeronautical Engineering in Bangladesh. The first conference jointly organized by the department and other departments of the Mechanical Engineering faculty was ICMEAS 2017.
Project Work is a necessity for the development of technical expertise of a department. AE department is no exception. Currently, two big project works are ongoing in this department.
1. Design and Fabrication of a Low Cost Active Phased Array RADAR
The students of AE department perform exceptionally well in national as well as international competitions. Out of that, a good number of students win and achieve the prize. The head along with the faculty members of this department give full support to the students participating in various competitions.
Department of AE is not only focused on academic development but also development of communication, leadership skills of its students. AE Department always encourages and gives support to the students to take part in different activities through which they can nurture there social, leadership and managerial skills. Furthermore, there are a lot of achievements of the students of this department in various events such as Inter-Department Sports, Debate and Cultural Competitions.
In the course of time, the department felt the exigency of organizing an Aero Designing Competition. These types of competition are arranged in all the developed countries for the students and hobbyist of aeronautical field. Including MIST, many other Universities (BUET, KUET, SUST, Daffodil Univeristy etc.), Hobbyist Club (Runway 32) and Organization (ESAB) are currently working with Radio Controlled Aircraft and UAV in Bangladesh.
An Aero Design Competition in national level thus became a demand of time. And for the first time in Bangladesh, National Aero Design Competition and Exhibition was organized by AE Department, MIST and held in 14-15 October 2014
Aeronautical Engineering department started its journey in 2009 and the first batch of Aeronautical Engineers graduated in early 2013. Surely, the department has come a long way and also has a long way ahead. On 2019, The AE Alumni Association was officially formed by which the current students can obtain an immense amount of help in numerous aspects. The AE department's Alumni are currently in various parts of the world in prestigious places giving their best. The AE Alumni Association is always ready to guide the junior students.
